The Art of Creative Expression
Eric is a local artist living in Olathe, Kansas. He is a graduate of Olathe South and Johnson County Community College with an associate’s degree in General Studies. Eric concentrated on music through his school years, playing percussion. After college Eric began his journey creating art. He started by taking an art class and found his place when he started working with a local art group. With the guidance of his mentor, Ahli, he has made it here to his first formal art show. His specialty is abstract and creating what has been kept inside that flows from within, which is depicted in his artwork.
Born and raised in Independence, Missouri, Greg graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1969. He spent Freshman year of college at Graceland University in Lamoni,Iowa as an art major, playing varsity tennis and a lot of volleyball. He transferred to the University of Missouri – Kansas City the next year. Exposure to Printmaking at UMKC later led to a Master’s in Printmaking at the University of Missouri – Columbia.
After fifteen years in Graphic Arts management in the screen printing industry, he turned to education which had been his originally declared major at UMKC. He has been teaching high school art since 1997, all but one of those years at Shawnee Mission West where he also coached Varsity tennis for ten of those years. The addition of a beautiful new art gallery at the school inspired him to give up coaching to establish and run a gallery program.
Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that. -Jasper Johns
This quote probably best summarizes my current approach to the process of making art. In an earlier life (as a printmaker) my process was more structured and the outcome was usually predetermined. The mixed media work exhibited here is looser, free and more spontaneous than any prints, drawings or paintings I had done previously. My drawings, prints, and photographs have been exhibited in local, regional, and national group and solo shows. As an active member of the Print Society at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, I have served in various positions that include Program Director, Vice President, and President.
